Who can participate?

Students of any nationality who are currently enrolled in a PhD programme in economics or finance are invited to participate. You are encouraged to enter irrespective of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or other characteristics.

Students currently employed by, or collaborating with, the ECB or a national central bank of the European System of Central Banks are not eligible to enter the competition. Co-authors of eligible papers should either be current students or have completed their PhD no more than five years ago.

Candidates and their work must comply with the professional, legal and ethical standards set forth in the European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity.

What is the theme of this year’s competition?

The theme of the 2021 ECB Forum on Central Banking is “Beyond the pandemic: the future of monetary policy”. Accordingly, PhD students are invited to submit papers on the following topics:

  1. the consequences of corporate, public and household indebtedness for macroeconomic stabilisation after the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic;
  2. the heterogeneous impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in terms of business dynamics, productivity and wages and its implications for the relative importance of different sectors and firms;
  3. the implications of climate change and the carbon transition for monetary policy and central bank operations.

Papers on other topics relevant to central banking (including monetary policy, the deepening of the Economic and Monetary Union, the functioning of the euro area economy and financial system, financial stability, and banking regulation and supervision) will also be considered.

How will students be selected?

The papers will be assessed using two selection criteria: (i) innovative thinking and scientific merit and (ii) European policy relevance. The information provided in the CV and recommendation letter will also be taken into account.

Successful candidates will be notified and receive further information about the Forum in July 2021.

What does the competition entail?

A maximum of ten selected finalists will have the unique opportunity to attend the ECB Forum on Central Banking on 28-29 September 2021. The work of the selected finalists, as well as research posters summarising the main findings of their papers, will be displayed on the ECB’s website and shared with all Forum participants, including policymakers, top academics and market economists from around the world.

During the Forum, finalists will have the opportunity to talk about their research with senior ECB experts and join panel discussions and expert talks within the Forum’s programme.

The finalists’ papers and posters will be assessed by a jury of top academics and senior ECB staff, taking into account votes cast by Forum participants. The winner will be announced by ECB President Christine Lagarde at the end of the conference and will receive a prize of €10,000.
