Professor Brian Bell has been appointed as the Chief Economic Advisor to the Treasury, succeeding Sam Beckett. The appointment was announced by the UK government on Friday.

This appointment is effective from March 9, 2026, and will position Professor Bell as a principal advisor to the Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Prime Minister Keir Starmer regarding macroeconomic strategies and fiscal policy.

Currently serving as the Chair of the Migration Advisory Committee to the government, and a Professor of Economics at King’s Business School, Professor Bell is a prominent labour economist who has a rich background that includes roles at the Bank of England and the International Monetary Fund. His expertise also extends to the private sector, where he has worked in various economic capacities for hedge funds and investment banks in London.

Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves expressed confidence in Bell’s leadership, emphasizing the groundwork laid by the government through multiple interest rate cuts which have contributed to falling inflation and economic growth exceeding prior forecasts. She remarked, "The appointment of Professor Brian Bell will strengthen our economic leadership as we deliver for working people."

James Bowler, the Permanent Secretary to the Treasury, welcomed Bell, recognizing his extensive experience as crucial for advancing the government's economic agenda.

Commenting on his new role, Professor Bell stated, "This is a pivotal moment for the UK economy, and I look forward to providing rigorous economic advice to ensure policy decisions yield real benefits for communities across the UK. "
