The Faculty of Business and Economics at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen invites applications for up to 2 Stephan Klasen Fellowships for postdoctoral researchers in development economics from low- and middle-income countries.

Prof. Dr. h.c. Stephan Klasen, Ph.D. was a German development economist who made lasting contributions to the economics of poverty, inequality, and gender in low- and middle-income countries. The Stephan Klasen Fellowship was established by the University of Göttingen on the occasion of Stephan Klasen’s farewell lecture to honor both his achievements in development economics research in Göttingen and his commitment to the training of young scholars. The fellowship period is from April 1st, 2026, to March 31st, 2027. Fellows are expected to relocate to Göttingen for the period of the fellowship.

Candidates from low- and middle-income countries according to the OECD DAC list of ODA recipients are eligible to apply. Candidates are further required to hold a PhD in development economics (or similar) before the start date of the fellowship. We are looking for early career researchers who completed their PhD within the past five years. Based on your specific conditions (please indicate, e.g., rearing of small children, severe illness, disability etc.), longer eligibility periods will be considered. Applicants with disabilities who demonstrate equivalent qualifications will be given preference. The university has committed itself to being a family-friendly institution and supports its employees in balancing work and family life.

One of the two positions for the 2026/27 cohort is reserved for a candidate from Latin America and the Caribbean. We gratefully acknowledge the Ibero-American Institute Foundation Dr. Weiershäuser for funding one of the fellowships.
