Utrecht University School of Economics (U.S.E.) offers one fully funded three-year PhD position. The candidate is expected to conduct high-quality research in the field of public economics, resulting in a doctoral dissertation. 

The candidate will be involved in the project ‘Voluntary sustainability certifications in public procurement and their welfare effects’. The aim of the project is to analyze the welfare effects of sustainable public procurement, and thereby contribute to Utrecht University’s research theme ‘Pathways to Sustainability’. 

The position involves participating in international conferences, workshops, and possible research stays as well as interaction with various stakeholders, including policy makers. Candidates are also expected to do a limited amount of teaching (0.1 FTE) in the Bachelor’s and/or Master’s programmes of the School. The teaching language is English.

Utrecht University School of Economics (U.S.E.) offers one fully funded three-year PhD position. Qualifications

The ideal candidate is expected to have:

  • a (Research) Master’s degree in a discipline relevant to the PhD project (preferably Economics, or another quantitative discipline);
  • excellent study results and analytical skills;
  • experience with empirical methods of causal inference and/or field experiments;
  • a willingness to master other empirical methods;
  • a desire to work independently;
  • an interest in and motivation for scientific research;
  • good command of spoken and written English;
  • knowledge of Dutch is an advantage.

Candidates are selected on the basis of their CVs, academic qualifications, motivation, and interview(s) with the supervisor.

Offer

We offer a temporary position (1.0 FTE), initially for one year with an extension to a total of three years upon a successful assessment in the first year, and with the specific intent that it results in a doctorate within this period. The gross salary ranges between €2,395 in the first year and €3,061 in the third year of employment (scale P according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year. 

U.S.E. offers appointments as a PhD candidate for 3 years. The candidate's performance is evaluated after 18 months and after a sufficiently satisfactory assessment, the contract is extended for the remainder of the project. During this time, 90% of the position is reserved for research and 10% is dedicated to teaching activities.
