The ESRI (Economic and Social Research Institute) is seeking to recruit a Research Analyst on a three-year, fixed-term basis to join its Labour Market and Skills team. 

The role is full-time, but consideration will be given to applicants who are pursuing a PhD in a relevant area and who are available to work part-time.

The Institute

The ESRI, founded in 1960, is located in Dublin’s South Docklands area. Our mission is to produce high quality research, relevant to Ireland’s economic and social development, with the aim of contributing to knowledge and informing policymaking and public debate. We have over 100 staff including economists, sociologists and other social scientists, in addition to support and technical staff.

The results of the Institute’s research, and the policy implications that flow from it, have been the subject of a huge range of publications by ESRI staff over the last six decades. All research projects undertaken by the ESRI have a significant public good element and results are published without restriction.

The Institute has excellent facilities and a supportive atmosphere, with a particular emphasis on team-based research. 

Labour Economics at the ESRI

The labour market team undertakes research on a wide range of labour market issues at both Irish and European levels, the results of which are disseminated to both policy and academic audiences.  The team is active across a range of areas including education & skills, minimum wages, labour market activation, technological change and social deprivation.

Academic collaborations are an important dimension of research, and we also enjoy strong collaboration and engagement with industry stakeholders.

Role Description

Applying their econometric and data skills, the Research Analyst will play a vital role in the maintenance and development of the ESRI’s research activities with a particular focus on the use of large online job vacancy datasets, and survey data such as the Labour Force Survey (LFS), to develop an increased understanding of a range of labour market issues including skills development, skills forecasting, skills mismatches and minimum wages.  Other responsibilities will include the provision of technical support and report writing. The Research Analyst will also contribute to co-authored policy reports and academic journal articles. The appointee will receive dedicated supervision and appropriate additional training as required. 

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

This role requires experience in the use of large survey datasets, a working knowledge of Python, strong quantitative skills, high proficiency in Stata and a proven level of expertise in the areas of skill mismatches and / or minimum wages. 

The successful candidate will have:

  • A master’s degree in economics;
  • Experience with major national and European survey datasets, such as the LFS
  • Experience working with Lightcast job vacancy data would be an advantage;
  • Extensive knowledge of research on skills and / or minimum wages;
  • Strong econometrics skills;
  • Previous experience conducting applied policy research;
  • Extensive experience using Stata;
  • Working knowledge of Python;
  • A track record of policy publications and / or academic journal articles
  • Excellent writing skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Proven ability to work successfully under tight deadlines;
  • Excellent attention to detail;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Location

ESRI, Whitaker Square, Sir John Rogerson’s Quay, Dublin 2. Applicants should note that staff have the option of working remotely from their home in Ireland on a ‘blended’ basis with a minimum requirement of one day per week (or as business requires) based in the ESRI office. This arrangement is running on a pilot basis. Full details will be provided at interview.

Terms & Application Procedure 

The standard working week is 35 hours, i.e., 09.30-17.30, Monday – Friday; (flexible working hours are supported). Part-time working arrangements for PhD candidates will be discussed at interview. 

Appointments (full-time or part-time) will be on a three-year, fixed-term contract basis. The starting salary will be €49,325 (pro-rated as applicable) which is the first point of the ESRI Administrative Officer (Higher) salary scale.

The selection process will consist of a preliminary interview and, for candidates successful at that stage, a final interview, presentation, and written assessment. The ESRI is currently conducting selection processes via videoconference (MS Teams or Zoom).
