The Institute of Economics (IdEP) at the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) in Lugano, Switzerland, invites applications from highly motivated and talented candidates for two Predoctoral Research Fellows in Labor Economics. The positions are for one year (up to two years on mutual agreement). The starting date is flexible and may be as early as September 2025. The workplace is USI, Università della Svizzera Italiana, in Lugano, Switzerland. Remote working is also possible.

The position
The successful candidates will work closely in all stages of research with Fabrizio Colella on various labor economics projects related to discrimination, migration, occupational mobility, and skill requirements. A particular focus will be given to the Swiss National Science Foundation-funded project “The Role of Firms in Wage Formation: Evidence from Immigration and Local Taxes in Switzerland” by Fabrizio Colella (USI Lugano), Josef Zweimüller (Uni Zurich), Rafael Lalive (Uni Lausanne), and David Card (UC Berkeley). The position provides an excellent opportunity to acquire hands-on experience performing state-of-the-art research in applied economics. The Research Fellows will be involved in different stages of research, including brainstorming, data manipulation, data analysis, literature review, and manuscript editing, and will receive support for future career development.

The ideal candidate

  • Has completed, or is in the process of completing, an M.Sc. in Economics or other quantitative fields (including Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, and more).
  • Has a long-term interest in pursuing academic research in economics or data analysis.
  • Has strong intrinsic motivation, a cooperative attitude, a sense of responsibility, and the ability to work independently in a structured manner.
  • Possesses strong computer and analytical skills. Knowledge of programming languages and statistical software such as Stata, R, or Python and experience with text analysis is a plus.
