Our MRes is the normal route to PhD Economics at Nottingham. It is an integrated one year Masters in Research, from which students progress to the PhD in Economics lasting 4 years.

We offer generous studentships for the duration of the MRes and PhD covering all fees plus total remuneration of Β£17,668 per annum. Scholarships are renewed at the end of each year on the basis of satisfactory progress being made. In exchange, school funded PhD students deliver moderate amount of tutorial teaching/marking assistance providing them with valuable teaching experience.

Why Nottingham?

The School of Economics at the University of Nottingham was ranked 5th in the UK for Economics and Econometrics in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework exercise, with 99% of our research being rated world-leading or internationally excellent. The department hosts eight major research centres as well as other informal research groups.

Our research centres

  • Centre for Decision Research and Experimental Economics (CeDEx)
  • Centre for Finance, Credit and Macroeconomics (CFCM)
  • Nottingham Centre for Research on Globalisation and Economic Policy (GEP)
  • Centre for Research in Economic Development and International Trade (CREDIT)
  • Granger Centre for Time Series Econometrics
  • Nottingham Interdisciplinary Centre for Economic and Political Research (NICEP)
  • University of Nottingham Economic Theory Centre (UNET)
  • Network for Integrated Behavioural Science (NIBS)

Our research groups and centres expose our MRes/PhD students to cutting-edge research from a wide range of areas within Economics. All the centres have their own seminar series, most of them with weekly or bi-weekly seminars where external speakers present their research and interact with staff and PGR students. We also host a number of internal β€œbrownbag” seminars where staff and PGR students present their own research ideas.

We have an excellent track record of placing our PhD students in top academic departments worldwide as well as international research organisations. Recent placements include University of Warwick, University of Oxford, University of Zurich, University of Bonn, Ludwig Maximilan University Munich, University of Brussels, European Central Bank, Bank of England and the World Bank.
