Master in Economics and Ecology

The master in two years is providing students with tools to understand how biodiversity and ecosystems are modeled and measured, how one can measure the ecological and the economic value of biodiversity and ecosystems, and how economic policy can be used to influence human behavior and its consequences on biodiversity and ecosystems. The program emphasizes teamwork and hands-on experience with real-world case studies and datasets.

  • The economics courses will be taught by faculty at Toulouse School of Economics (TSE)
  • The ecology courses will be taught by faculty at Station d'Écologie Théorique Expérimentale du CNRS à Moulis (SETE) and at Laboratoire Évolution & Diversité Biologique (EDB) at Université Toulouse 3 Paul Sabatier. 
  • Note student can apply to either to the full program (i.e. the two years) or directly to the 2nd year (refer to the Admission section)

  **Masters 2 Directors highly recommend to attend these options : -    Industrial Organization: M2 EMO -    Economic of Human Development: M2 PPD -    Corporate finance et Market Finance: M2 Finance -    Panel Data or Time series: M2 EEE *** Math refresher courses opened to M1 and M2 students **** To attend the Martingales theory and applications course you need to have attended the Markov Chains course first

Bonus point

To practice a sport or a musical activity within the University orchestra, or the participation in the module "professional life"  during the year can give youbonus points. Only points above 10/20 are recorded (please refer to the Welcome booklet).

Non-Mandatory:

** Refresher course in Mathematics, open to M1 and M2 students of the School.

*** Mandatory course for students who have never taken a course with equivalent content, or who have taken the Environmental and Resources Economics course in M1 but have obtained a grade of less than 10/20.

Program 2020-2021

SEMESTER 3

  • Introduction to Ecology and Economics

One course among :

  • Internship or Master thesis
  • End of Master Day: a full day of presentations by guests from the private and the public sector, researchers, and students

(1) Compulsory course for students with M1 in Economics (2) Compulsory course for students with M1 in Biology/Ecology * Students followed the course " Professional Development" in M1 in 2019-2020 will be exempted. ** Upgrade course in Mathematics, open to students in M1 and M2 of TSE before classes start (end of August).

***Mandatory course for students who have never taken a course with the equivalent content, or who have taken the course "Environmental and Resource Economics" in M1 but have obtained less than 10/20

Students  will be put in an excellent position to work in any public or private organization that seeks to evaluate both the ecological and the economic consequences of human activities on biodiversity and ecosystems. Examples of such organizations include large companies, governmental bodies (both at the national and at the local level), NGOs, and supranational organizations.

 

  • Aimed at English speakers
  • Students should hold a BSc in Economics, Applied Mathematics within a recognized curriculum considered as consistent with the program and approved by the TSE selection committee.

Second year admission:

  • Admission is based on academic excellence criteria.
  • Applicants from the French system must have passed the TSE International track Master 1 (1st year Master’s) in Economics or another French University master in Applied Mathematics or an equivalent degree (e.g., engineering school,…). 
  • For foreign degree holders, the required degrees are either a BSc, M.A., or MSc, within a recognized curriculum regarded as consistent with the program and approved by the TSE Selection Committee. 
  • Some brushing-up in Economics or Maths might be advisable in some cases. Working knowledge of English is obviously required.
