How to Write a Research Proposal
If youâre applying for a European-style economics PhD or Masterâs of Research program, itâs highly likely that youâll be asked to submit a research proposal. This is a document where youâll describe the original research project you intend to pursue if youâre accepted into the economics program. This is going to be a fairly intense process. While not legally binding, this document is a major part of your application, and itâs extremely important to write a convincing and high-quality proposal. Giving yourself as much time as possible to work on it can only help you. However, if youâre applying to PhDs for the first time, this is also most likely your first time writing an economics research proposal. So, what to do?

Cosa rende un economista di successo?
The following article first appeared in the INOMICS Handbook 2024.Download the INOMICS HandbookâThe master-economist must possess a rare combination of gifts. He must reach a high standard in several different directions and must combine talents not often found together. He must be mathematician, historian, statesman, philosopherâŠHe must study the present in the light of the past for the purposes of the future. No part of man's nature or his institutions must lie entirely outside his regard. He must be purposeful and disinterested in a simultaneous mood; as aloof and incorruptible as an artist, yet sometimes as near the earth as a politician.ââ John Maynard Keynes

A Post-PhD Career in Research: Jack of all Trades, Master of Some
Our favorite caricature of a post-doctoral researcher: a frail man (or woman) with unkempt hair, hunched in front of a computer screen, with a half-filled cup of coffee by his side. As the coffee gets colder and time flies by, he appears oblivious to his surroundings. He is happy spending long hours at his desk conceptualizing arcane theory on obscure topics the real world does not care about. He is in a state of eternal "tapasya" â meditating on his eternal love-affair with knowledgeâŠbecause life is an eternal quest for knowledge! Or, so the world believes. Once the PhD has been completed, and freshly-minted researchers decide that research is what they would like to do for the rest of their lives, their friends and family might start assuming that a Doctor of Philosophy is just another armchair intellectual.

The INOMICS Questionnaire: Fratzscher vs Miguel
Esteemed economist, Berkeley Professor, and friend of INOMICS, Edward Miguel generously took time out of his busy schedule to take part in the fourth INOMICS Handbook Questionnaire. Opposite him in his customary role of quizmaster was Professor Marcel Fratzscher, president of the DIW Berlin, and one of Germanyâs leading voices in macroeconomics. Observing tradition, and as a nod to those involved, the encounter has been dubbed âFratzscher v Miguelâ. What took place was both in-depth and personal, the conversation ranging from the beauty of Hawaii and gender bias in economics, all the way to wealth taxes and COVID-19. For anyone connected to economics, especially those starting out, this one is not to be missed.

Policy or academic economist: Which should I become?
âI am an economist,â I once proudly mentioned at a party, in a round of small talk. âOh, so you do a lot of money counting and financial reporting?â was the reply I heard, like so many economics graduates before me. âNah, letâs leave that to the business and finance professionals,â I answered. But what do real economists do exactly?
