The International Center for the Study of Institutions and Development (ICSID) at the Higher School of Economics in Moscow is pleased to invite young scholars to submit to the conference "Contemporary Trends and Prospects in the Political Economy of Development".

12th Annual ICSID Conference "Contemporary Trends and Prospects in the Political Economy of Development" will be organized in a hybrid format by the Higher School of Economics in Moscow on September 16-17, 2024. The event attracted a large number of young scholars and experts from different universities presenting new research on a variety of topics.

Contributions from the fields of sociology, economics, and political science were also invited. We welcome submissions that adopt theoretical, empirical, qualitative, and quantitative research designs, which can offer useful perspectives on recent developments and new challenges in the political economy.

Topics of interest for submission include, but are not limited to,

  • The role of institutions in economic development;
  • Human capital and economic development;
  • The role of technology in modern world;
  • Regional development and social institutions;
  • Social capital and cultural norms;
  • Experimental research in the social sciences;
  • History and persistence of economic growth;
  • Comparative cross-country studies of institutions and development.

The workshop "Contemporary Trends and Prospects in the Political Economy of Development" welcomes scholars from around the world and will operate in both English and Russian languages, with priority given to English. To ensure efficient communication and engagement, the workshop sessions were categorized based on language preference: English sessions and Russian sessions. However, it was highly encouraged for participants to present in English to accommodate a broader audience.

Adapting to current global circumstances, the workshop will adopt a hybrid format. It will consist of in-person sessions as the primary mode of interaction; however, virtual participation will also be accommodated. Despite the allowance for online involvement, we placed a higher emphasis on face-to-face communication, thereby encouraging as many participants as possible to engage physically.

To participate in the workshop, please submit a paper abstract of up to 250 words (or a draft), together with a maximum two-page CV, by July 16th, 2024. Applicants will be informed about the selection before August 15th, and the authors of the accepted proposals are expected to submit full papers/presentations by September 6th.

The International Center for the Study of Institutions and Development (ICSID) was one of the first international laboratories to be created by the Higher School of Economics in 2011.
