Tom McKenzie

Tom McKenzie

Tom holds degrees from the Universities of Bonn and Cologne and has taught economics at institutions in Germany, Turkey and the United Kingdom. Tom is Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in England and Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Dundee, Scotland. In his work, Tom studies differences between the private, public and voluntary sectors, focusing on “Who pays for what, and why?”. In 2019, Tom co-authored the winning essay for the Richard Koch Breakthrough Prize hosted by the Institute of Economic Affairs, proposing a policy to restructure the funding of post-school education and broaden opportunities for young people in the UK. Tom contributes to the development of INOMICS educational material for students of economics.

Mirjam Sarah Salish - INOMICS Author

Mirjam Sarah Salish

Mirjam obtained her PhD from the University of Bonn in 2016 after completing a Bachelor and Master´s degree in Economics at the Vienna University of Economics and Business. Since 2016 she’s worked as a visiting professor at the Economics department at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid where she teaches undergraduate courses in “Industrial Organization”, “Principles of Economics”, “Microeconomics” and “Econometric Techniques”. Her research interests are in microeconomic theory, particularly game theory, industrial economics and the economics of innovation. One of the central questions of her work is how uncertainty and risk affect the incentives firms have to innovate and invest in R&D. More recently, Mirjam has begun to explore questions of income and wealth inequality as well as health economics. Together with Tom she is helping develop the INOMICS’ educational material.

Simone Schotte - INOMICS Author

Simone Schotte

Simone obtained her PhD in Economics from the University of Göttingen in 2018. Since 2019, she has been working at the United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER) in Helsinki. Before coming to Helsinki, she worked at the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) and was a consultant to the World Bank. Simone is specialized in International and Development Economics. Her main research focus is on the interlinkage between inequality, labour markets, and processes of structural transformation. Simone contributes to the development of INOMICS’ educational material.

Hanna Sakhno

Hanna Sakhno

Hanna is a PhD in Economics candidate at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands. She obtained her Research Master in Economics degree from the University of Glasgow and an undergraduate degree in International Economics from the Higher School of Economics in Moscow. In her PhD project, Hanna studies the political costs of a green transition in Europe. Between her Master’s and PhD, Hanna worked at an economic think tank in Kyiv, Ukraine, where she led the Human capital research area. Working closely with the public and private sectors, Hanna was helping the government shape labor market and education policies. Hanna has been contributing to INOMICS since March 2022.

Steven Proud

Steven Proud

Dr. Steven Proud is a Reader of Economics Education at the University of Bristol. He has almost 20 years of experience of teaching, and related teaching administration. Alongside this, he is a member of the executive group of the Economics Network. His research is focussed on the education of economics, and he is an editor of the International Review of Economics Education. Steven has been contributing to INOMICS since May 2022.

	Giandomenico Scarpelli

Giandomenico Scarpelli

Giandomenico Scarpelli graduated cum laude in Economics in 1981 and, in 1985, obtained a post-graduate diploma in banking at the University of Rome. For many years he worked for the Bank of Italy, where he dealt above all with the issuance of government securities, the Eurosystem monetary policy operations and the payment system issues. From 2019 to 2021 he was the head of the Payment System Directorate of the Bank of Italy. He was member of international groups and committees set up at the OECD and ECB. He has published, inter alia, an essay on the public debt management in Italy and a book on economics and finance in masterpieces of literature. He is interested in questions concerning the economy in relation to the environment and after his retirement he is investigating more deeply these issues.

Sara Taha

Sara Taha

Sara obtained her Master’s degree in Economics from the German University in Cairo, after completing her Bachelor’s degree with a triple major in Economics, International Business and Strategic Management. Some of her main research interests include Development Economics, Macroeconomics and Environmental Economics. Driven by her passion for environmental matters, her most recent research addresses the impacts of biodiversity loss on economic growth in addition to the role of environmental protection policies in reshaping our economies. Since 2019, Sara has been an Assistant Lecturer at the German University in Cairo, alongside her PhD. Sara has been contributing to INOMICS since May 2022.

Sahar Milani

Dr. Sahar Milani is an innovation economist and associate professor at St. Lawrence University in the United States. Her research interests include environmental economics, macroeconomics, and the financing of innovation. She received her PhD in economics at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee.

Benedikt Schmal

Benedikt Schmal

Benedikt is a PhD candidate under the supervision of Justus Haucap at the Duesseldorf Institute for Competition Economics (DICE) at Heinrich Heine University Duesseldorf, Germany. He received his Bachelor's degree in economics from Free University Berlin, Germany, and his Master's degree in quantitative economics from University College Dublin, Ireland. Research stays during his PhD led him so far to the KU Leuven in Belgium, the George Mason University in Virginia, USA, and the University of Reading in the UK. Benedikt's research studies the economics of science and academic publishing in particular. Further, he is interested in the political economy of business cartels and innovation.

Simtiha Ishaq Mir

Simtiha Ishaq Mir is a full-time senior research fellow at the Department of Management Studies at the University of Kashmir. She has completed her Integrated Masters in Business Administration from the same department, and qualified for JKSET and UGC-JRF. She has approximately 2 years’ experience working with the Jammu and Kashmir Bank in loans/advances and KYC/AML. Her research interests include household and corporate debt, econometrics, stock market crashes, and economic crises.

Sean McClung

Sean completed his Master's degree in Economics and Management Science with a focus in quantitative methods from Humboldt Universität zu Berlin in the spring of 2023. He received his Bachelor’s degree in business with a management consulting emphasis from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2016.

Prior to INOMICS, Sean worked in corporate strategy and research for a firm serving U.S. higher education institutions. His projects there included studying financial aid and online program management. He joined the INOMICS editorial team in January 2022, and enjoys getting to write about his intellectual passion - economics.

William Pearse

William Pearse

William was an author and senior editor at INOMICS from 2018 to 2021. Having received his bachelor degree from Sussex University in England, he completed a Master’s Program in Global History at the Freie and Humboldt Universities in Berlin, Germany. Pearse’s next step took him into the world of editing, where he worked in collaboration with a number of leading European academics. In 2018 he joined INOMICS, directing its content department. He cites the economics of climate change and gender equality as his main areas of interest.

James Matthew Alston

James Matthew Alston

James was an Author at INOMICS from 2018 to 2020. After receiving First Class Honours from Cardiff University, he moved to Berlin to study his Master’s in History, which he completed in 2020. Alston cut his teeth writing articles about the insurance sector, and later as a freelancer writing on topics as diverse as climate systems breakdown, student mental health, and animal rights for several high-profile blogs.
