The macroeconomic effects of geopolitical uncertainty

 Rising political tensions worldwide are gradually reshaping the global economic order, with geopolitical uncertainty impacting policy decisions and economic performance. This year’s conference aims to bring together scholars, researchers and policymakers to discuss the potential implications of an intensification in (geo-)economic and financial fragmentation for international trade, production networks, payment systems, asset prices, cross-border investments, migration, technological progress and the international monetary system.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

• Effects of geopolitical uncertainty on macroeconomic policy strategies, especially monetary policy;

• Impact of geo-economic fragmentation on the cross-border transmission of shocks, like energy shocks;

• Interactions between geopolitical uncertainty and technological progress, including digitalization and the green transition;

• Consequences for the international financial system, e.g. capital and trade flows.

Keynote Speakers:

  • Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas (IMF)
  • Şebnem Kalemli-Özcan (Brown University)
  • Sydney C. Ludvigson (New York University)

Policy Panel:

  • Philip R. Lane (ECB)
  • Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas (IMF)
