Monthly remuneration (14 times per year) for a 40-hour week will be € 3,286.40 gross (FWF Austrian Science Fund standard salary for a PhD candidate) or above, depending on qualifications and experience.

We are seeking someone with an MA in Economics and/or Spatial Planning, with willingness to constantly learn and explore new research agendas, an interest in applied research and policy evaluation, and good quantitative and econometric skills. Research experience in regional and spatial analysis and knowledge of territorial development policies are a plus.

With more than 50 years of experience, the Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies (wiiw) is one of the principal centres of economic research into Central, East and Southeast Europe (CESEE). We have expanded our work on European integration issues more generally to encompass not only the CESEE EU member states, but also developments in the EU and in the broader Europe and its neighbourhood. We also cover a wide variety of issues surrounding international economics. Our overall thematic research extends to macroeconomic analysis, international economics, labour markets, regional analysis and industry studies. We are looking for an ECONOMIST interested in regional and spatial analysis (m/f/d)

If you are appointed, your major tasks will be:

  • Economic research on sub-national regions in the EU and its neighbourhood
  • Data collection and analysis
  • Acquisition and execution of research projects

We are seeking someone with:

  • An MA in Economics and/or Spatial Planning
  • Willingness to constantly learn and explore new research agendas
  • An interest in applied research and policy evaluation
  • Good quantitative and econometric skills (Stata/R; GIS skills are an advantage)
  • An excellent command of English (written and oral)
  • Ideally, German and/or Eastern European language skills
  • Very good (proposal) writing and presentation skills
  • A positive working attitude
  • An ability to work independently as well as in teams
  • Research experience in regional and spatial analysis and knowledge of territorial development policies are a plus

Initially, the contract will be for a fixed term of 24 months, but the appointment could be made permanent (subject to a satisfactory probationary period).
