The research unit Migration and International Labour Studies is looking for a full-time researcher focusing on labour market policies and their effect on the integration of refugees. The integration of refugees plays a very important role in a number of economic and societal challenges.

The position is part of a project on the evaluation of the effect of labour market policies on the integration of refugees in Germany. Using microdata you would be focusing on the following questions:

• The labour-market integration of refugees from European and non-European countries. 

• The effectiveness of labour-market and integration policies for refugees in Germany. 

• You will be paying special attention to heterogeneity within the group of refugees (for example mothers or more generally women, age groups, different education and qualification groups.

• Special attention will be paid to the integration of refugees over time.

As part of the project you will have access to the IAB administrative data as well as to the IAB-SOEP Migration Sample and the IAB-BAMF-SOEP Survey of Refugees, which are administered by the IAB with its partners DIW and BAMF and are linked with the administrative data of the Federal Employment Agency. With access to these datasets you have excellent opportunities for high-quality empirical research on very relevant academic and policy topics.

You have a Ph.D in Economics or another social science, or are close to completing one. Good knowledge in refugee and migration topics, quantitative methods and causal analysis, as well as knowledge of statistical software (for example Stata or R) are a prerequisite. Knowledge of survey methods, the IAB administrative data as well as publications in academic journals on the topic of migration are a plus. Prior experience with survey data, SGB II instruments, job centres, and the support of refugees is considered an asset.

Tasks and activities

• Labour market and occupational research using current methods

• Planning and implementation of complex projects, concepts, models and methods in the research unit 

• Control and monitoring of research-relevant processes in the research unit

 • Analysing and publishing research and work results

• Advising the relevant stakeholder groups 

• Initiation and management of (sub-)projects

 Prerequisites

• University degree; PhD or comparable qualification 

• Preferred specialisations: Economics, Sociology or another social science 

• Relevant professional experience or comparable profile

• In-depth knowledge in a relevant subject area, e.g. migration research, labour market research

• Sound knowledge of economic, labour market and social policy 

• In-depth knowledge of empirical research methods

 • Sound knowledge of statistical analysis methods 

• English (knowledge level B2 according to CEFR), German language proficiency is an advantage

The initial duration of the full-time position is set for a period of time that will conclude on the 31st of December 2026, with the objective of extending it. Part-time work is a possibility, provided that there are no conflicting business needs. A proportion of the duties may be undertaken remotely.

 Remuneration is in accordance with the statutory salary scale of the Federal Employment Agency and the associated benefits. The remuneration corresponds at least to TE II, Level 1 (currently approx. 4.700 € gross income for a full-time position). With a completed doctorate or with at least two peer-reviewed publications (with two co-authored publications corresponding to one single authored publication), remuneration amounts at least to TE I, Level 1 (currently 5.200 € gross income for a full-time position).

In addition to the fixed monthly salary, other salary components may be paid, e.g. an annual bonus. In addition, we offer a company pension through the Versorgungsanstalt des Bundes und der Länder (VBL - Pension Institution of the Federal and State Governments) and the possibility of deferred compensation after a certain period of employment.
