A LEADING MASTERS DEGREE IN ECONOMICS

The Scottish Graduate Programme in Economics (SGPE) offers a one-year research-focused MSc in Economics, with a possibility of specialisation in Econometrics and Finance. An optional summer school is available for those without a specialist economics background.

Hosted and awarded by the University of Edinburgh, one of the world’s top 20 universities (16th in the 2021 QS World Rankings), the programme combines the teaching and research expertise of eight of Scotland’s most prestigious universities. This unique collaboration means that you will have access to an unparalleled range of electives taught by experts working at the cutting edge of the field, and you’ll play an active role in Scotland’s economic community by taking part in a busy programme of workshops, seminars and events.

The MSc runs from September to August, and covers the main subjects of microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics (statistics) at an advanced level and aims to give students the technical ability to communicate in the language of modern economic research. Our in-depth programme will equip you with the tools a professional economist needs to work in government or in international organisations. It also serves as a foundation for PhD study.

Entrance requirements

To be eligible for the MSc Economics you need a strong grounding in Economics at the undergraduate level – at least a good UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent in economics or mathematics related subjects. We look for high grades from your undergraduate studies covering calculus and integration, probability theory and linear algebra.

We offer a four-week summer school course for those who didn’t take or specialise in Economics in their undergraduate degree, but who have a strong technical background, such as a very good degree in science, engineering or maths. The summer school covers the main subjects to an intermediate level. It runs every August; students who successfully pass the exams can immediately proceed onto the MSc in September.
