Junior Data Scientist

Job Description:

The Competitiveness Research Network (CompNet) and the Halle Institute for Economic Research (IWH) – Structural Change and Productivity Department, are looking to hire talented data enthusiasts to be part of our exciting effort to develop a European Micro Data Infrastructure (MDI) accessible to researchers and policy makers, as well as supporting and enhancing our existing CompNet data infrastructure. Your job will be to support us in building an interface between researchers and databases from national statistical offices, this includes jointly developing syntax and the translation of existing syntax into multiple statistical languages. Furthermore, your tasks include collaboration with and provision of assistance to researchers interested in using the data as well as collaboration with national statistical agencies in order to expand the database and improve its usability for cross-country research. The interested candidates should have a strong research interest and will be expected to contribute to existing or new research lines as a part of the team. The research will leverage the strengths of the confidential micro-data available through National Statistical Institutes (NSI) and can be either country specific or cross-country in nature.

The job implies a weekly commitment of 40 hours (flexible).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the team in building and maintaining the micro-data infrastructure (MDI)
  • Harmonize datasets from different countries to enable comparative economic research
  • Write and optimize R scripts using data.table and other relevant tool packages
  • Collaborate on projects using GitHub and other open-source tools (R, Quarto, etc.)
  • Work with firm-level and productivity data, ensuring accuracy and consistency
  • Manage and analyze big data
  • Build and harmonize datasets to meet project requirements

    Required Qualifications:

  • strong programming skills and willingness to learn new programming languages. Proficiency and familiarity with R programming is a strong asset.
  • a background in data science, statistics, econometrics, computer science, economics, finance or other quantitative discipline at the Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. levels. Alternatively, 3 years of relevant experience in similar roles.
  • Confidence in managing and analyzing big data and large datasets
  • Proven experience in building and harmonizing datasets
  • Experience in using Github. If you have some public repositories on your profile, please include your Github in your CV.
  • the ability to work collaboratively - good analytical skills
  • Experience working with firm-level panel datasets is an advantage
  • Relevant experience in data centres or similar is an advantage.
