Prof. Dr. Philipp Doerrenberg
The University of Mannheim, Business School, is offering several positions as:
Doctoral Researcher in the Field of Firm Survey Research (75%, starting in September 2023)
Successful candidates will join the Center for Doctoral Studies in Business (CDSB) at the University of Mannheim. During the first year of the PhD program, candidates receive full funding to complete the structured course program of the CDSB, which includes state-of-the-art PhD classes in (Applied) Econometrics, Microeconomics, Survey Methodology, and Accounting and Taxation research.
Starting in the second year, candidates join the German Business Panel (GBP) as part of GBP’s research staff. The German Business Panel (funded by the German Research Foundation through the Collaborative Research Center TRR 266 Accounting for Transparency) conducts firm surveys with a focus on topics in taxation and accounting.
Using the survey data generated through the GBP, successful candidates are expected to conduct empirical research focusing on topics either in the field of taxation or accounting. The objective is to produce research that is published in the leading international journals in the fields of business and economics.
The positions are fully funded (and no tuition fees). Candidates receive a CDSB scholarship during the first year and then move to a 75% (TVL E13) position at the GBP as of year two. The positions do not come with any teaching obligations (though there are opportunities for students interested in acquiring teaching experience). We encourage and support research visits abroad throughout the PhD program. Our students are thoroughly prepared for the academic job market and we frequently place our graduates at top universities.
We welcome applications from candidates with a background in business studies, economics or related fields (e.g., psychology, sociology, political science if they include training in statistics and quantitative/empirical work). Prior knowledge in empirical work/data-handling and/or accounting/taxation is preferable, but not strictly necessary. The course program during the first year is in English and we welcome applications from international candidates.
If you are interested in the positions, please apply through the GESS/CDSB application surface (please apply either for the taxation track or accounting track, depending on your interest) and indicate clearly in your application that you are interested in the survey-research positions at the German Business Panel. Please consult the CDSB website for application requirements.
The application deadline is: 31. March 2023.
Please reach out to Professor Philipp Doerrenberg (doerrenberg@uni-mannheim.de) if you have questions about the specific GBP positions and to the CDSB staff (cdsb.gess@uni-mannheim.de) for questions on application details and general questions about our structured PhD program.
We are looking forward to your applications!
