MA/MSc in Economics

The department’s degree programs emphasize the historical roots of economic ideas, their application to contemporary economic policy debates, and conflicting explanations and interpretations of economic phenomena. The department's work centers on the changing shape of the world economy, its financial markets and institutions, problems of regulating and guiding economic development in the advanced industrial world and in emerging markets, complexity in economic systems, labor markets, and the economic aspects of class, gender, and ethnic divisions.

The New School for Social Research offers four postgraduate degree programs in Economics: 

• MA in Global Political Economy and Finance
• MA in Economics (30 credits, suited to students who are interested in continuing to a PhD)
• MS in Economics (45 credits, suited to students who wish develop their research skills in economic modeling and econometrics, without being committed to completing a PhD degree)

Master's students at The New School for Social Research also receive financial assistance to support their studies. Approximately 85% of master’s students receive merit scholarships at The New School for Social Research, and recent master's students have received merit scholarships averaging 41% of tuition costs. 

The New School for Social Research is a graduate institution in the heart of New York City. It generates progressive scholarship and provides historically grounded education in the social sciences and philosophy. With more than 75 full-time faculty members, its nine departments and interdisciplinary committees offer master’s and doctoral degrees to 800 graduate students from 70 countries. Cross-disciplinary centers and institutes housed at The New School for Social Research provide further opportunities for innovative collaborations, particularly at the intersection of social theory, policy, and design.
