The Master’s Degree in “Migration and Development” is a Master of Sciences (MSc) administered by the Social Sciences and Economics Department (DiSSE) of Sapienza, University of Rome.

The Master aims at shaping professionals capable of addressing the most innovative needs in the various sectors of the labor market which, for various reasons, require and/or rely on professional figures related to the migratory phenomenon and the connected issues of sustainable development.

The MSc in Migration and Development is intended for individuals interested in developing concrete expertise in the field of inclusion policies and of protection of migrants’ human rights, and, concerning the implementation of economic and social policies, in both public and private bodies, as much at national level as at the international one.

The course aspires to train professional figures for a career in the socio-economic field as well as in the legal or the international relations fields, including cooperation for development and geo-politics, planning, analysis, and public health. Examples of professional profiles consistent with the Master are positions of high responsibility in the field of cooperation for human and social development, of volunteering and in the third sector within national and international bodies and organizations, including non-governmental ones, as well as educational institutions, institutions in the field of social, cultural, economic, legal and health cooperation, both for managerial positions and highly specialized consultancy and planning posts.

The added value of this MSc lies in encouraging a global vision of migratory phenomena, with an approach that goes beyond the traditional approach of linguistic and cultural mediation. The understanding of the migration phenomenon is enhanced by studying and analyzing problems related to the development of human, social and economic issues both in the countries of origin and in the countries of destination. This interdisciplinary approach is developed through the direct involvement of professors, scholars, and practitioners in the field of anthropology, law, economics, political sciences, health sciences, and sociology, whose, collectively, provide a theoretical and practical approach that allows creating appropriate skills to understand, manage and regulate migratory flows in the perspective of human and sustainable development.

This MSc takes advantage of strategic partnerships that Sapienza maintains with international organizations (UNHCR, IOM, and the UN Rome Based Agencies), Ministries (first of all, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation; Ministry of the Interior-Department of Freedom Civil Society), think tanks, study centers, and research centers, non-profit organizations, agencies and organizations of the Civil Society (CSOs). The aim is to strengthen the proposed curricula and to guarantee students a complete and comprehensive view of the topics addressed, projecting them at the core of the issues with testimonials and practical experiences. Lectures and meetings with experts and practitioners of the sector constitute the added value of the Master that is unique thanks to its combination of theoretical notions and practical foundations. The exchange with professors, lecturers, scholars, operators, practitioners, and experts from institutions with which Sapienza has stipulated such partnerships guarantees comprehensive training on migration issues, strengthening both the theoretical and practical skills of participants.
