If you are interested in developing adequate tools for confronting economic hypotheses with real-life data, and making proper inference for policymaking, then a Ph.D. in Econometrics is the ideal program for you!

The Ph.D. in Econometrics at the Institute of Economics and Econometrics of the Geneva School of Economics and Management is a rigorous graduate program that allows the candidate to acquire solid econometric, analytical, and empirical skills as well as carry out innovative research at the cutting edge of econometrics in a stimulating academic environment.

The University of Geneva has a long tradition of offering a unique specialization in Econometrics at the Masters and Ph.D. levels. The Ph.D. in Econometrics exists at the University of Geneva since the creation of the Department of Econometrics in 1970. The first Econometrics chair in Switzerland was created at the University of Geneva in 1966. This position was attributed to Professor Luigi Solari who later founded the Department of Econometrics. This Department, along with the then Department of Economics, has now become the Institute of Economics and Econometrics of the Geneva School of Economics and Management. Right from its early days, the Department of Econometrics has had international renown in this field and has maintained it over the years. The Institute is proud to comprise leading research scholars with a high level of expertise and competence in theoretical and applied econometrics.

The successful Ph.D. students will go through appropriate courses during the first year of their Ph.D. to equip themselves with the advanced methodological tools necessary for pursuing doctoral research in econometrics. They will also have the possibility to follow optional courses in Economics and related fields depending on their area of interest. The institute provides the students with the opportunity to learn and flourish in a stimulating academic environment, and interact with professors and fellow researchers working on a wide range of topics in Economics, Econometrics, and interdisciplinary areas.

The Institute organizes weekly research seminars in which international experts present their recent papers, and sets up one-on-one meetings for interested Ph.D. students who would like to discuss their research with the speakers.

Motivated students can also take advantage of University of Geneva’s proximity to international governmental and non-governmental organizations in Geneva as well as Institute members’ connections with them, to get opportunities for involving themselves in their projects of direct impact on societies across the world.

The deadline for applications is 28 February 2022, but earlier applications are welcome and some admission offers could be made earlier.
