AI supports the case to introduce a Universal Basic Income (UBI)
One of the key features of the global economy is that it tends to grow over time. In fact, that growth has become something of an expectation in the modern capitalist system, where the success of corporations is often judged by their growth, even over relatively short time horizons.

Tips to plan your marketing & recruitment activities for the 2015-2016 term
Valuated at approximately $4.4 trillion in 20131, the education market is one of the largest markets of all and shows signs of continuing to. If some years ago pursuing a master’s degree was an extraordinary goal, nowadays many bachelor’s graduates consider a Master’s degree as a must, radically increasing the market size. Moreover, if we sum up the technological development of E-learning and the expansion of universities in the field of international cooperation and recruitment, the education sector looks very promising for continued fast growth, with at least 23% annual growth in the coming years according to the IBIS Capital investment bank.

How to properly cite your conference paper
One of the great things about attending conferences is getting to learn about the latest and most cutting-edge research before its published in journals or books. You can hear authors presenting their newest work, sometimes even before their experiments or data collection are complete. This information is very interesting to have, however, it is also more speculative than published work as it has not been peer-reviewed or edited. For this reason, it's important to be clear when you cite a conference paper, so that your audience can see that the work has not been peer-reviewed. To help with this, here's a guide on citing conference papers.

Effective Ways Economists Can Build a Personal Brand
Building a brand used to be just for companies and universities – but now a personal brand is something that every student and academic needs to work on. While many academics are hesitant to brand themselves too actively, you should remember that not working on your brand is in itself a kind of branding, and not a positive one. So you’re going to have to spend some time building your personal profile as a researcher – but there are some tips that can help to make this process smoother and more efficient. Here are effective ways economists can build a personal brand.

A primer on how popular AI models work and their current limitations
Artificial intelligence tools are becoming more and more ubiquitous with each passing week. The development of ChatGPT-3.5 in particular launched conversations about the capabilities of AI into the mainstream. Since then, news stories and speculation about AI supplanting (and sometimes replacing) human workers continue to be released. The economics of AI is, as a result, becoming an important topic in our field.

Navigating the PhD Literature
The literature research students need to rely on throughout all of their thesis writing is diverse. Broadly categorized there are three types of literature useful for PhD students: research/topic literature, methods literature, and ‘how to do your PhD’ literature. A somewhat similar classification of PhD materials can, for example, be found in Chris Hart’s Doing a Literature Search: A Comprehensive Guide for the Social Sciences (2010, Sage, p.2), which I recommend immensely.

Scholarships in Germany
Germany is a prime location for study, and one which draws many international students. The high quality of education available, combined with relatively cheap tuition fees, makes it an attractive option when looking for opportunities to study abroad. If you are considering study in Germany, an important consideration is how you will finance this study time. Tuitions fees are usually in the range of up to a few hundred Euros per semester, depending on the geographical area, as each federal state sets its own level for fees. However, other costs need to be considered as well – not only accommodation and living costs, but also budgets for books, travel, telephone and internet access, and entertainment and social activities. Finally, health insurance can be expensive, depending on your circumstances.

Life as an Economist in France - Salary and Working Conditions
While it was the UMP, France’s conservative opposition party, that won the majority of votes in Sunday’s first round of town hall elections in France, the far-right Front National also made decisive gains, particularly in areas that used to be bastions of the left wing. The ongoing difficulties in the French economy are often cited as one of the key reasons for this redrawing of the political landscape and the losses for the ruling Socialist Party.

Diving Off Into Your PhD
A PhD was something I always dreamed of doing. On the one hand, it was a natural continuation of my, it now seems, life-long learning curve after my Master’s degree. But, more importantly, it was also a faraway dream on the horizon that seemed worth pursuing just for its own sake. I probably knew my love of research should last me the entire doctoral spell but no one will ever be able to fully explain to you what it is like to undertake a PhD until you have finally let yourself fall into its subtle embrace.

The Case for Wealth Taxation
The emergence of Joe Biden as the unassailable front-runner in the Democratic Primary belies a contest that at various turns broke new ground. From its unprecedented field, larger and more representative than ever (save the brief participation of two billionaires), to the remarkable resuscitation of one moribund campaign, the departure from custom was clear. Nowhere was this more obvious than in policy, where the inclusion of senators, Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, dragged the conversation leftwards into distinctly uncharted territory. While all candidates acknowledged America’s extreme inequality and the need for better healthcare, social security, etc., divergence came in the prescribed means of redistribution, and unusually discussion extended beyond familiar calls to raise income tax for the rich. Most liberal of the proposals was a wealth tax: an annual tax on everything an individual owns. Its mere suggestion confirmed an improbable rise of a policy that until recently was dismissed as fringe and anti-aspirational.

Top Apps for Researchers: Social Science Must-Haves
In a 2012 post on Top Apps for Economists, we noted that the word “app” was becoming integrated into our daily lives. Two years later, I’d say it’s achieved a solid place in contemporary vocabulary. Yet, while you may not think twice about using an app to check a train schedule, buy a movie ticket or peruse Facebook, you still might not be aware of the plethora of great academic and professional apps available as well.
