Publication behavior in economics â Reputation, visibility, and the gender gap
In recent times, debates on gender inequality among researchers at universities have emerged, in particular in economics. Even though leading academic societies have addressed these issues already for many years â for example, the American Economic Association has run the âCommittee on the Status of Women in the Economics Professionâ (CSWEP) since 1971, and the European Economic Association established its âStanding Committee on Women in Economicsâ (WinE) in 2003 â they appear to be persistent.

Does Economics Have a Problem with Women?
Economics has a gender problem, it always has, and unfortunately, it appears to be getting worse. Until recently, the impression was that this historically male-dominated discipline was turning a cornerâalbeit rather slowlyâand the number of women studying economics was creeping upwards. That progress, however, looks to have stalled, and by some accounts, including that of the Australian Department of Education, actually gone into reverse. All the while, the number of women in the STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths)âlong notorious for their poor gender ratiosâhas been steadily increasing. It looks as though the âold boysâ clubâ of economics might be closing ranks.

Nobel Prize in Economics 2018 - The Winners
The announcement of the Nobel Prize in Economics 2018 could not have been timed better. It took place just 24 hours after the release of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Changeâs (IPCC) stark warning that only 12 years now remain for global warming to be kept to a minimum of 1.5C, beyond which catastrophe looms. Rather appropriately, considering the admonishment, the gong was jointly awarded to Americans William Nordhaus and Paul Romer for their research into, as put by Swedish Academy, two of the most âbasic and pressingâ economic issues of our time: âlong-term sustainable growth and the welfare of the worldâs populationâ.
